Even with last fall’s storm, everything is still tightly secured

According to Hornstra from Ter Idzard (NL), the perfect covering system does not exist: « Every system has its pros and cons. If it’s not labour-intensive, then it takes a lot of time. And if it doesn’t take much time, like with an automatic system, then it’s extremely expensive. These are considerations that a farmer must make beforehand. The Silage Safe system does take some time the first time, but once it’s covered, it’s solid as a rock. » Hornstra proudly points to his pit: « Even with last fall’s storm, everything is still tightly secured. »

Hornstra has had covering experience with Silage Safe for several years now. « Before, I used sand on the pit, which had the advantage of providing good pressure. But with frost, it’s an extremely heavy task. But with frost it is a very tough job, which requires a lot of hard digging. Silage Safe has the advantage that in the winter months you can easily loosen the buckles”, Hornstra explains., » explains Hornstra.

The quality of his pit is very good. In the photos, it can be seen that there are no signs of fermentation or mould present; the cutting surface is nicely even.
